Learn Makaton at Derwen College

Do you live or work with children or adults who use Makaton to communicate? Communication is one of the most important skills we need in life, so it is essential that Makaton users can communicate their needs to those who support them each day.

Makaton is a unique communication programme that uses symbols (pictures), signs (gestures) and speech. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

All training takes place in-person at our Gobowen campus near Oswestry.

The Charity provides extra experiences and opportunities for our students to truly progress and thrive.

Derwen Charity has helped shape the College according to our students’ needs, since 1963. Thanks to fundraising and donations, the College has been able to grow and adapt, and become a leader among SEND colleges.

Makaton For... Learning Disability Teams

Wednesday 18 November – 5.30-8.30pm 

Makaton For… Learning Disability Teams is a 3-hour workshop designed specifically for professionals working in, or with, Learning Disability Teams. 

The Learning Disability Teams workshop will give you tools to promote inclusion, dignity and safety, as well as reduce anxiety and misunderstandings by making communication clearer. It will help you to support students to express needs, choices and emotions, and strengthen relationships between staff, individuals, families and carers.

Makaton For... Early Years Settings

Wednesday 25 November – 5.30-8.30pm 

The Makaton For… Early Years Settings is a 3-hour interactive workshop designed for early years professionals who want to create calm, engaging and inclusive environments where all children can thrive. Makaton helps children connect, express themselves, and feel understood, even before they can speak.

By attending this workshop you will be able to create an inclusive setting that supports every child’s communication. In addition, you can support early communication and language development, reduce frustration and help children express their needs, strengthen bonds between children, parents and practitioners.

You will need to attend both weeks to complete the workshop.

You need to complete Level 1 Makaton training before you progress to Level 2 (please send a copy of your Level 1 certificate prior to attending).
